Listeningis part of our everyday life. To live a quality life it is aprerequisite for one to develop effective listening skills. Activelistening can basically be described as being active as one listens.It entails fully and carefully focusing with all senses what aspeaker is saying. Proficiency in active listen is not a walk in thepark. It is bound to take a lot of time, practice and persistence toperfect.

Ininterpersonal communication, listening is perhaps the mostsignificant component. Without properly listening the flow ofinformation is compromised and this results in ineffectivecommunication. It is not all about hearing but consciously willing tolisten as well as comprehend a communicator’s message. Listenersare supposed to give the speaker ample time to express their ideasand opinions without interrupting and to also be neutral as theylisten. It is fundamental for listeners to be open-minded and avoidbeing judgmental, jumping into conclusions or forming opinions(Grohol, 2013).

Activelistening needs a lot of patience and total commitment to hear outwhat someone else has to say. Non-verbal and verbal signs are acrucial component of active listening (Grohol, 2013). Speakers feelempowered when their listeners aptly respond to them and this waythey are able to comprehensively give their information. Some of thecommon and important non-verbal indications that one is listeningactively include eye contact, proper posture, appropriate bodygestures and a smile. On the other hand, important verbalreinforcement includes clarification, summarization after a speakerhas finished, reflection and questioning (Grohol, 2013).

Conclusively,listening actively can be summarized as the ability by a listener tobuild trust, rapport and understanding with a speaker (Grohol, 2013).It is not a simple task for it calls for ones determination andconcentration.
