Thechapter looks at ways of improving the learning abilities of learnersby recognizing that their learning abilities vary according to theage that a child is introduced to learning, their origins and socialclass. To support this argument, the chapter gives statistics on thealready done studies based on these aspects. According to thesestatistics, it is evident that teachers are facing challenges whenperforming their duties. So, what are the solutions?
Thechapter recognizes that there is no single method or program that canbe employed to maximize student achievement. I agree with thisstatement because studies have proved on the same. However, as thechapter asserts, student achievement can be maximized by the use of acombination of learning methods. These methods are encouraged throughthe use of state-funded initiatives that according to the chapterinclude Response to Intervention (RTI) and the Race to the Top (R2T)initiative. The Common Core State Standards for English Language Artsis an initiative that provides both teachers and parents on the needsof children to effectively learn so that these two parties can knowhow to help their children.
Thechapter echoes the National Reading Panel to provide the five basicfactors of learning as “phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and compression.” These are essential for the learningprocess, but the commitment and vision of the teacher to employ thecombination of methods that he or she deems fit for the studentsdetermine whether the students will achieve. Apart from using the tenevidence-based best practices that have been proven to work, theteacher has to have knowledge on the best evidence-based bestpractice that can work for the students he or she is in charge. However, apart from pumping educational information, the studentsneed socially and cognitively learn in order to blend easily in thesociety. I recommend that the information provided in this chaptercan help to improve the education sector.
