Asan art of influencing people, leadership is dynamic and its styleschange from person to person. The diversity is because personalleadership abilities are unique to each and every individual in anorganization. Therefore, leadership in an organizational contextcreates a platform for exploring personal potential opportunities. Aspeople develop leadership skills, they facilitate the development ofan organization through appreciation and leading of change towardsbetter human relations. To understand how personal leadershipabilities influence the organizational context, this paper seeks tounderstand strengths and weaknesses in personal leadership positions.With this understanding, this paper will explore how I can alter myleadership style as a way of becoming a better leader.

Oneof the most valuable abilities in leadership is transformationalskills that propels an individual to turn transform an organizationfor the better. The strength of a person’s leadership abilities isexhibited by the results or changes that he or she leads in anorganization. This is because the organization depends on thepersonal abilities that a leader has to transform or change itsfortunes. According to Collins (2001), Darwin Smith was able totransform Kimberly-Clark from a lowly performing paper company into aleading multinational that surpassed all the expectations of manybusiness analysts. This presents me with a perfect example to followand embrace skills that develops my leadership skills into those of atransformational leader.

Adoptionof transformational leadership is a potential opportunity that I havein regard to the organizational context of introducing and leadingchange. However, it is one of the weaknesses that I have to tackle inorder to achieve the standards of a better leader who can transforman organization. This weakness exhibited in the organizationalsetting through the reluctance of accepting and appreciating changein the organization. Through the acknowledgement and theunderstanding of this personal weakness, I will be able to learnadvanced leadership skills that form a transformational leader. Suchlearning is possible through the use of my strength in learning andappreciating new knowledge and skills.

Asa transformational leader, I will be able to make significant changesin the organization that transforms it to better performance. This ispossible through the use of leadership and managerial skills tounderstand the status of the organization and determine the necessarychanges in its capital and human resources structures. Smith, forinstance, understood the status of Kimberly-Clark and decided tochange its resources by selling some of its mills and focus on theconsumer business (Collins, 2001). Through such decisions andchanges, Smith was able to turn around Kimberly-Clark and create atwenty year leadership legacy of the twentieth century. Adoption oforganizational changes is a skill that is important for mytransformational influence and leadership in an organizationalcontext.

Withstrength in planning and setting of goals, I believe I can developthe skills needed to lead transformation and change in myorganizational context. To be a transformational leader and leadchange in my organizational setting, I will need to utilize mystrength in setting goals and develop it by learning how to setstrategic goals. According to Rooke and Torbert (2005), atransformational leader should be an achiever and have certain extentof expertise to the organization. According to his seventransformations of leadership, George asserts that an achiever likeSmith above makes strategic goals and promotes teamwork towardsachievement of the pre-determined goals (Rooke &amp Torbert, 2005).This teaches me that I should have excellent planning skills that arenecessary for an organization.

Tobe an effective leader in the changing organization managementenvironments, it is necessary that I should possess excellentplanning skills. Through learning, which is my strength, I will beable to learn strategic planning skills to add into my goal settingexpertise. According to Rooke and Torbert (2005), an achiever leadershould be not only possess the planning skills, but also be able tocombine the managerial duties and plan to achieve the goals byresponding to market demands. This way, a leader will be able tounderstand the dynamics of the market and strategically align thegoals of the organization with the needs in the market. To achievethis level of leadership expertise, I will have to learn more byincorporating the skills that have been tried and tested by the bestleaders in the past.

Anotherof my strengths is conflict resolution and management within groups,teams and individuals in an organization. This is evident in thegroups that I have led in the organizational setting. Through the useof leadership skills, it would be important to managing the conflictsthat come along in an organization, especially with employees (Bennis&amp Thomas, 2002).In an organization, changes that are associated with transformationalleadership are resisted by individuals who may be tempted to maintainthe status quo. Therefore, the adoption of transformationalleadership like those experienced by Kimberly-Clark above causesminor or major conflicts that require the leader to be good atsolving them.

Bysolving such conflicts, I would set a stable and a peacefulorganizational environment that promotes the processes of change totake place. According to Nahavandi (2014), dealing with change,whether planned or unplanned is a process that is faced with internaland external forces that requires managerial competence to suppressthe conflicts. For instance, change presents new processes andfunctionalities that interfere with the current organizationalculture (Nahavandi, 2014). With culture being an element of anorganization that is challenging to transform, conflicts may ariseand requires personal abilities of a transformational leader to leadthe change. This calls for use of creativity and improvisation thatpresents new ways that an organization faces and manages change.Therefore, I will embrace such changes by using the personalabilities of dealing with conflicts in case of such eventualities inthe transformation process.

However,one of the weaknesses that may inhibit my development into atransformational leader is lack of experience in management and topleadership positions. As a new leader in management, I may not havepersonal experience in dealing with people, among them experts andprofessionals in the organization who tend to think they are right.This is because most individuals and groups in an organization expectto be led by a manager with higher credentials and experience thatthem. To solve this weakness, I will use my learning to acquireadvanced knowledge in transformational leadership. In addition, Iwill apply my strength in team leadership to appropriately delegatesome of the duties that require experience to appropriate experts.

Tobecome a better leader, I will have to alter my conservativeleadership style to embrace transformational styles by embracingchange and transformation in an organization. To deliver excellentresults like Smith at Kimberly-Clark, I will alter my style toaccommodate change by embracing the benefits and processes that comealong with change in an organization. I will need to use my learningskills to understand the need for change in transformationalleadership. In addition, I will use my conflict management knowledgeto gain the skills needed in handling with such conflicts.

Moreover,becoming a better leader will require me to alter my leadership styleof managing issues at a personal level and embrace teamwork in allthe stages of management. This will help to solve the weakness ofhaving lesser experience in management by allowing me to engage moreexperienced individuals into management and team leadershippositions. According to Bennisand Thomas (2002),this will promote participative management as a way of shaping theworkplace cohesion. Therefore, I will be certain of establishingteams that are self-sustaining and that combine experience withexpertise. I can a make this possible by making teams liberal throughappropriate delegation of duties.

Improvementof personal leadership abilities is necessary to develop anindividual into a better leader in an organizational context. Due tothe importance of personal skills and abilities in leadingorganizations, I will use my strengths in management and leadershipto alter the weaknesses and improve on my leadership style.Therefore, through appropriate alterations, I will become a betterleader by adopting transformational leadership. Additionally, I willuse my strength in learning to gain advanced skills in changemanagement and application of strategic planning and setting of thegoals for the organization. To be a better leader, I will incorporatethe skills of team leadership and conflict management to managechange and promote transformation. This will allow me to lead anorganization towards achieving its goals and align them with theneeds of the market environment.
