Leadershiptraits are the aspects of a personality that makes a person aneffective leader. According to Goffeeand Jones (2000),having the essential qualities of leadership and effectively usingthem to lead is what makes a person an acceptable as a leader. Suchqualities make other people interested to be led by an individual(Goffee& Jones, 2000).The assessments in the text exposed my reality about leadership andleadership traits. The assessments were important in discovering myleadership orientation and understand the traits that constitute agood leader.
Fromassessments, it is clear that I possess most of the necessary traitsof good leaders. Most of my scores show that my value systems andtraits are leadership-oriented. As I realized in assessment 4.1, itis my ambition that I will manage a multinational company withglobally diverse business. This means that my leadership skills willbe tested in steering such a company into global success (Nahavandi,2014). In the value system assessment in exercise 4.1, confirmed thatI am ambitious and industrious. In terms of personality, I am honest,I am affectionate and I work to maintain integrity as well aspersonal dignity. As a leader, I am independent and self sufficientenough to take initiatives that contribute to my feeling ofaccomplishment.
Oneof the most interesting assessments was on exploring my level ofemotional intelligence. This does not only expose my emotionalintelligence, but also the need to work on getting better indeveloping it. In addition, learning about my status in proactivelyin assessment 4.3 opened my view on the importance of leaders to beproactive. This is in addition to self-monitoring skills learnt inassessment 4.5 that enumerate the importance of a leader tounderstand him or herself, as also envisioned by assessment 4.6 onnarcissism (Nahavandi, 2014).
Thebest way to learn to be a true leader is by learning how to discoverour true self so as to be authentic leaders. Therefore, my change ofattitude will be directed towards realizing myself more than justlearning the different leadership styles. By realizing my authentictraits, I will be able to discover the attitudes and characteristicsthat I should change so that I can align my personality to theuniversal leadership standards. This is because I recognize that notall traits, attitudes or beliefs that I hold can nurture the art ofbeing a good leader. To be a good leader, I will have to change someof my behaviors and attitudes to be consistent with those of theleaders.
However,the changes in attitudes and behavior must not change theauthenticity of my leadership traits and philosophy. As much asleadership can be a learnt phenomenon, it is also an individualaspect of personality that is innately experienced. According toGeorge et al (2007), the best way to lead people is learning how tolead ourselves by discovering our authenticity and uniqueness inleading others. This is affirmed by Goleman (1996) as he discussesthe elements that lead to effectiveness of leaders. Therefore, I willappreciate the changes that I must make but also work to improvemyself so that I can remain true to myself.
Thestudy and assessments illustrate that effective leadership cannot beseparated from the application of positive attitudes. To develop myleadership skills and become a better leader, I have to change someof my previous attitudes and embrace the new knowledge. For instance,I have to change the attitude that managers are automatically goodleaders. This is not true because leadership is an individual skillthat should be acquired by everybody in the organization. In fact, Ihave discovered that leaders are good followers, when circumstancesmake them follow their seniors. This is because leadership creates asense of servant hood.
Consequently,I have to change the attitude that leaders work more than otherpeople in the organization. With the ambition that I have to manage amultinational organization, it is imperative that I embrace thechange of attitude about leadership. This is because the higher theresponsibilities, the higher leadership skills are needed. Thishappens in a typical organizational setting that has responsibilitiesand authority increase as a person is elevated in managementpositions (Nahavandi, 2014). As a high level manager, I will have tounderstand the dynamics of management that include leadership as acore function. Therefore, to be a leader is not a part of the jobdescription, but a part of the personality that take managerialroles. With such information, I have appreciated the need to align myattitudes to reflect my future career desires.
Leadershipis an art that is expressed by the traits and qualities that areobserved through the practice of influencing the behavior of others.The readings and assessments helped me to discover some of thequalities and traits of effective leaders and assisted my descriptionas a leader. To improve my leadership traits and qualities, it isimperative that I adjust some of my attitudes and behaviors withoutnecessarily losing my authenticity. This means that I will improve myleadership skills through change of attitudes, but being true tomyself at the same time.
