Whatis Plagiarism?

Themoment a person represents ideas and words from printed sourceswithout using quotations or paraphrasing in academic work, constitutes to plagiarism. The problems with plagiarism areexperienced when people fail to indent their work appropriately, identify direct quotation with quotation marks, or also fail to citetheir work, or use the recommended format for citing for specificdiscipline. When materials are written in one’s own words in partor in full, acknowledgement is then vital. Acknowledgement is done bythe use of paraphrases, and then concluded with appropriate citationor a footnote. This process helps in identification of the exactreference.

Plagiarismmay also occur when a student fails to acknowledge other materialsused, in the bibliography part of his or her work. Failure to citesources of facts and information not common to students’ knowledgeleads to plagiarism. On the other hand, there is no need toacknowledge common knowledge information like prominent leader’snames and various basic scientific laws. Sometimes what a personthinks is his or her work might turn up to be not fully his or herown. Such situations occur when for example a student ask for helpfrom a friend. The friend helps out by changing various sentences anddoing revisions. This work belongs to the friend who did the writing.

Inconclusion, when a student understands the boundaries between his orher own ideas and those of others, it means that he or sheunderstands what plagiarism is. By maintaining this boundary, students are not likely to plagiarize their work since they haveknowledge of where to end their ideas, and those of others fromdifferent readings and class discussions, start. It is difficult tofind this boundary if one does not have knowledge of either privateor is public property. Everyone, like class and group discussions, contributes to the formation of public property hence, they can useit without any restriction. Information that is not available foreveryone and was created by another person is private property. Useof private property requires one to use citation and quotation.
